Introducing Dan Black – HYPNTZ (The Notorious B.I.G. Hypnotize cover) + London shows

“I knew what kind of music I wanted make, but at first I found it hard to get these conflicting desires to blend well outside of my head. I’d been making these weird remix/mashups for my occasional Djing, so I thought, I’ll take the method I’ve been using for that but use it for song writing instead. The very first thing I tried was HYPNTZ.” – Dan Black
“HYPNTZ” is the first offering from Dan Black. In a quest to meld the musical attributes of “Paul’s Boutique” with “( )”, “Hatful Of Hollow” with “Supa Dupa Fly” and The Notorious B.I.G. with a lost 80’s sci-fi soundtrack – this Paris-based, English exile has created something nothing short of brilliant.
Fusing the ubiquitous beat from “Umbrella” with heavily chopped-up samples from the film soundtrack of John Carpenter’s “Starman”, Dan audaciously decided to cover one of the holiest scriptures of hip hop: “Hypnotize”. By bending Biggie’s brutal, braggadocio, mouth-twisting flow over his own aching, passionate melody, almost miraculously, he transformed the ultimate rap brag into a deeply heartfelt, bittersweet epic.
Dan never originally intended “HYPNTZ” to be heard by anyone, even more so after he had begun stockpiling an absurd wealth of completely original material.
“…with my history with music, this track just started to seem more and more like the perfect opening salvo. It really wipes the slate clean but simultaneously shows, very dramatically, where it is I’m going.”
And with a wild, brand new electronics-meets-human live show proving to be every bit as unique as his music – where Dan Black is going, is starting to sound very much like where we will all want to be very soon.
Dan Black’s “These Things Take Time” track was recently played by Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 1. The beats on the track are familiar to “Maneater”.
