Heidi Spencer's Cult Hero Dad Was Her First Influence
On March 29th, Milwaukee's Heidi Spencer & the Rare Birds will release 'Under Streetlight Glow' on Bella Union.
Though this is Spencer's first nationally released album, her roots in the city's art scene were planted long before she was born.

Heidi's father, the late Jim Spencer, was a driving force behind Milwaukee's underground scene in the 1970's; a co-founder of the countercultural poetry journal 'FREEK Magazine' and member of the psychedelic folk group Major Arcana, whose original pressings are now extremely sought after by record collectors.
Jim cultivated Heidi's growth as an artist at an early age. "We grew up in music studios, at his east side basement apartment, he'd press play on the tape recorder, give us a microphone and we'd put on our own little pretend radio shows."
Though the elder Spender died when Heidi was nine years old, she recalls, "I found his guitar in the basement when I was 15, grew up with my door closed singing quietly and taught myself how to play."
