J. Lewis grew up in a Dallas, Texas suburb surrounded by a variety of musical influences, everyone from Steely Dan, the Beatles and Jack Johnson to Prince and his number one inspiration, Michael Jackson. An athlete in high school, J decided his real passion lay in dance, trading in the locker room for the hardwood floors and mirrors of an urban dance studio.
By age 17 he was headed to Hollywood, hoping to break into music by way of the dance industry. "I just didn't want to be auditioning for other people's videos," J quickly realized. "I wanted to be making the video."
Pursuing this path included waiting tables as he paid dues, honing his songwriting craft, taking vocal coaching and learning new instruments besides guitar.
Three years of working the Hollywood music scene finally paid off in 2008, when one of his many showcases at venues like The Viper Room, The Roxy and The Hotel Cafe led to a production deal with Blackground/Interscope Records.
A track he recorded with FloRida recently made the rounds of the internet, but J is ready to rocket up the charts with the groove-worthy track "Shut 'Em Up."
