Gramercy Arms is an ever (r)evolving collective of New York-based artists. On their self-titled debut, due November 18th, 2008, via Cheap Lullaby, the band comprises members of Guided By Voices, Luna, Joan as Police Woman, Dead Air and The Dambuilders.
A love letter to a classic New York sound, Dave Derby’s disaffected poetic sensibilities mesh with the guitar virtuosity of Sean Eden and Hilken Mancini in the grand Gotham tradition of the Velvet Underground and Television, shot through with a love of seventies pop rock. Padding the band’s resume to an almost ridiculous degree, Gramercy has called on additional contributors for this release, from Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, who sings on “Nothing I Can Do” to Joan “As Police Woman” Wasser, who lends her vocals to “Wander On.”
In addition, the album features performances from Lloyd Cole, Chris Brokaw as well as members of The Pernice Brothers, Mascott, Shudder to Think and comedienne Sarah Silverman, a friend of band leaders Rainy Orteca and Dave Derby, who provides backup vocals for the summery “Looking at the Sun.”
On December 6th, 2008, the supergroup will celebrate the release of Gramercy Arms and take the stage for their lone live performance of the winter alongside Nada Surf and Jealous Girlfriends at Bowery Ballroom in NYC.
