2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the death of GG Allin, the most notorious Rock N Roll artist of all time. For the first time ever, Allin’s prison-era memoirs have been compiled in “My Prison Walls”, a 208 page hardcover numbered limited edition collector’s book that contains letters, illustrations, prose, and Allin’s own personal accounts of his time spent in prison. It is limited to 2500 numbered copies.

The book begins with Allin’s “30 Days In The Hole” his journal, in his own handwriting, detailing his first days in lock up. This comprises the first 50 pages of the book and gives the reader a first-hand account of Allin’s mindset at the time. In addition, there are over 40 pieces of art and prose by Allin, plus correspondence with his family members, convicted serial killer John Wayne Gacy, Jeff Clayton of ANTiSEEN, and many others.

The Second Coming by John Niven – book review

The Second Coming by John Niven – book review.

The Second Coming by John Niven
The Second coming is a very humorous, can’t put down read of a book. As the title suggests this is a story about the good Lord revisiting the earth in 2011, this time though, instead of being a carpenter, he is a humble musician.

The Second Coming by John Niven

The Second Coming is a very humorous, can’t put down read of a book. As the title suggests, this is a story about the good Lord revisiting the earth in 2011, this time though, instead of being a carpenter, he is a humble musician.

This is a tongue-in-cheek ‘what if’ story. There is drama and tough luck tales a plenty in this book, but on the whole it is a good time, almost road trip adventure with surprising twists and turns on each page.

Jesus has to enlighten civilisation about the destruction of his father’s planet – armed with only a guitar and his disheveled disciples. With everyone believing he is a bit crazy and not really the son of God at all, He winds up performing on the book’s version of American Idol and dealing with Steven Stelfox, John Niven’s answer to whom I believe to be Simon Cowell.

Kill Your Friends by John Niven – book review

I recommend this book for those who like fast paced page turning stories that keep you on the edge of your seat.

Well Mr. Niven you have done it again. Thank you for this read, look forward to your next offering.

Kristin Hersh Crooked book and album review

When Crooked by Kristin Hersh arrived in the mail I didn’t waste any time opening the package and then the hard cover book.

When Crooked by Kristin Hersh arrived in the mail I didn’t waste any time opening the package and then the hard cover book.

Kristin Hersh

By having the book in hand, it feels quite exciting being ‘a part’ of the innovative concept: “a publishing industry first” with Kristin, lead singer of Throwing Muses, releasing her new studio album, Crooked, as a book. A first for any major recording artist, which makes this “a groundbreaking publication”. The book is published by HarperCollins imprint The Friday Project.

Kristin Hersh - Crooked

I read the book before I listened to the album. The pages within include first the song title and description by Kristin, and then the next page, the lyrics to the song along with beautiful close up shots of flowers, the photos taken by Lisa Fletcher, and so on. When I finished reading the book, I read again, along with the music (after going online and unlocking with a code for access), which brought the book to life. Beginning with Mississippi Kite.

I started to write down stand-out tracks on Crooked, but stopped as I realized that my list was getting longer with each song that came on. Kristin’s husky yet sweet voice, along with her passionate delivery, prominent guitars, dark grunge-like melodies and poetic lyrics make for a complete stand-out album. The same goes for the downloadable EPs, ‘Beginnings’ and ‘Remainders’ that come with the digital package found on the Crooked CASH Music page.

As I was listening to ‘Beginnings’ I reached for the book, but realized that there isn’t a book for the EPs. As a music first for me, I think Kristin may have started a trend here, because I can see books along with albums – or albums along with books – becoming the norm for some…I hope. A great idea for both the literary and music worlds.

Highly recommended.

‘Kill Your Friends’ by John Niven – book review

Kill Your Friends by John Niven

I’ve been reading books since I was little, but back then, the plots weren’t so hot. I mean, let’s go with ‘The Cat Sat on the Mat’ or the old favourite, ‘Fun with Dick & Jane’. As I grew, so did my understanding and humour. Now I enjoy reading about all sorts of things. Sci-fi, thrillers, murders. It’s all good. I even get a kick out of some of Dickens books.

But this book ‘Kill Your Friends’, man!

‘Kill Your Friends’ is one of those books you really do find yourself laughing out loud to. You laugh at its honesty about the music business – which the book is based on the British music industry in the late 90’s. You find yourself laughing at the nasty things the main character gets up to in order to keep his drug fueled job going.

I know you always hear people saying “You’ve gotta see this movie” or “hey, you really must visit India, man”, but I’m telling you if you’re involved in the music business or not – especially if you’re just picking up a guitar for the first time and thinking “I want to be in a band and get paid for tooling around all day” – READ THIS BOOK! It is the Gospel. It takes a lot to get me out of the pram these days. But I couldn’t put this book down. It was written in a way like you were watching it at the movies (and I can guarantee this will be a movie in the next couple of years).

So I say well done John Niven and thank you for giving me one of the best reads ever!

This book is funny, tragic and educational. Miss it and you will have missed out.

For years, I had heard of the band Godsmack, but never really knew much about them. A friend of mine, here in England, recently read Godsmack frontman/founder Sully Erna’s autobiography, The Paths We Choose – and it was funny to find out that Sully comes from Massachusetts and now lives in New Hampshire – my old state. The band was pretty much in my backyard the whole time, but it took someone in England to turn me on to them.

Sully Erna seems like a cool guy. I watched a couple interviews with him on YouTube and I like his open mindedness towards life and music. When I listen to Godsmack I can’t help but think of Metallica and Alice In Chains, so I’m glad that Sully’s up front about them being his influences – along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

Originally a drummer, there’s also footage on YouTube of Sully Erna and Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin’s drum battle “Batalla De Los Tambores” from Godsmack’s DVD “Changes”. You’ve gotta love the way the drums slide onto the stage. They sound great – and it’s good to hear the Rush segment at the end. (You can also find that video on Shannon Larkin’s Yamaha page.)

Click here for more Godsmack videos

“I Stand Alone”, the first single off of Godsmack’s third studio album, ‘Faceless’ was featured on the soundtrack for The Scorpion King and is also in the video game, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (Watch video), along with “Straight Out of Line”. They’ve had other songs in movies, and I think it’s always good to see bands getting their music in movie soundtracks. I wonder if Godsmack will do more with video games? I think they should.

Godsmack - Good Times, Bad Times

To celebrate 10 years as a band, Godsmack released their Greatest Hits album, ‘Good Times, Bad Times… Ten Years of Godsmack’ December 4th, 2007 on Universal.

The Greatest Hits album includes most of their commercially released singles along with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times, Bad Times”. The video for it is fun to watch, but seeing the opening shots of Boston like the bridge, the infamous Citgo sign and the fan wearing the Red Sox shirt makes me feel a little homesick!
