You know those days where everything’s coming right, you’re enjoying a happy evening after a great weekend, and then the perfect email pops into your inbox. Maybe it’s from a pal you haven’t heard from for a while who’s got guestlist for a great gig/party, a girl you really like suggesting you get a little fruity that evening – or just maybe it’s from the inspirational Andrew WK (I swear this is true) himself – telling you that your label name is great and asking to hear more about what you’re up to.

Via BSM records, these are Andrew’s exact words – presumably typed in a brief few seconds between partying ever so damn hard!

From: “Andrew W.K.”
To: “Kevin Douch (founder of Big Scary Monsters Records – co founder of Alcopop!)”

Also, will you tell me more about Alcopop? I really like that name a lot. Is that another one of your label imprints?

Much love,
Andrew

Mr WK – Alcopop Records salute you sir…

Despite mounting pressure to make their lives easy with all of the desirable lunches and dinners A&R expense accounts bought Enter Shikari, in November 2006 this band from St. Albans, England took it upon themselves to make the (possibly reckless) decision NOT to sign to a major label. Instead, they took a loan from their distributor, Vital/Integral, and announced they would be releasing their debut album on their own Ambush Reality label.

Enter Shikari’s debut album ‘Take To The Skies’ was released in the UK, Europe and Japan in March 2007 and quickly slammed into the Number 3 spot on the UK album charts – not to mention two singles hitting the number one spot.

Then, in true punk form, Enter Shikari rejected US label options and partnered with label imprint Tiny Evil Records (Jimmy Eat World, Brand New, AFI) for the October 30th, 2007 stateside release of ‘Take To The Skies.’ The main benefits of this route are that Enter Shikari has never had to listen to anyone else’s advice but their own. They have taken themselves from ‘one man and his dog’ to capacity crowds. All without ever having to wait for a ‘tastemaker’ deem them this afternoon’s ‘next big thing’. Not bad for a bunch of St. Albans lads.

Edges that were once rough (and would surely have been smoothed over and dulled by advice from those with an interest in shifting product) have instead been sharpened by the road, turning Enter Shikari into one of the most exciting, brutal and explosive live bands on Britain’s screamo / post-hardcore / whatthefu**ever ’scene’ to this date.

After playing a packed to rafter tent at 2006’s Download Festival and then opening up for My Chemical Romance, the loyal “Army of Shikari” was steadily growing at a rapid pace. Validating all their hard work, perseverance and a no compromise attitude, the lads went on to sell out the London Astoria, being the second band ever in the world to achieve such a feat without a record deal or album out.

How do they feel about being asked to play [the Give it a Name Tour]?

“We’re very excited about playing. And it’s some massive venues, with like seventeen thousand people. It’s a crazy line-up. I mean, we’re above Senses Fail, which is just incredible because we love them…I’m looking forward to seeing bands like Thursday and Brand New…AFI…HIM” – Big Cheese

When the late and greatly missed Tony Wilson walked into the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Show town hall one evening back in June 1976, he stumbled across a little known band called Sex Pistols, playing to a half empty room consisting of a bunch unenthused northern union workers and overeager junior industry folk. At that very moment Wilson knew he’d just discovered a band so utterly groundbreaking, exciting and ultimately inspiring upon that stage. A band that had credible music critics baffled and scratching their heads, ranting what a joke they were. Yet soon became genre defining icons, symbolic of a subculture that still resonates in various forms to this very day.

Last summer Tony Wilson himself, was ranting away to many about another band he’d also found in the UK in the summer of 2006. In came Enter Shikari…

Two parts post-hardcore, the other half synth-rock trance. With obvious nods to the 90’s UK rave scene along with another to punk and hardcore, they’ve managed to rally up even the most stoic of fans to mosh like madmen and wave their hands in the air like the most dedicated of ravers!

Enter Shikari has been called everything from punk to trancecore, trance emo to flat out screamo. UK Press labeling aside, what we have here is another groundbreaking and genre defying band. They’re the only band who walked away with 2 prestigious Kerrang Magazine Music Awards this year for Best British Band, and The Spirit of Independence Awards.

In true Keith Moon fashion, Rolfe is quite possibly the wildest member in the band, he is blatantly unable to physically stay behind his drum kit through out the set, continually moving stage front during (the) synthesized parts of songs – he’s a key element into what gets the crowd excited and what makes this band so utterly unique in their performances.

“Rou Reynolds’s snarled verses give way to choruses that are literally choral-unison vocals whose sustained notes and purity of tone uplift the spirit like sunlight pouring through stained glass”. – Blender

“We want to do things differently”, says Reynolds, “we always have. We want to do things ourselves and we want to take responsibility for the things we do. We want to make something that’s personal, because otherwise how can people be expected to relate to it? How can they be expected to like us?”

Watch video – Enter Shikari “Mothership” Live at Reading Festival:

Finally bowing to pressure from the fans they’ve collected online, this past spring they embarked on their first ever US tour. This was without any label behind them, they managed to wow the crowds in North America all on their own, with a short run of dates in Anaheim, Pomona, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Toronto, Worcester and New Jersey to start.

When they recently played in NYC at an all ages Bowery Show, over 300 kids who moshed and raved, then broke out the windmills, oozing the angst so familiar to audiences who went to see the Pistols back in the late 70’s. The enthusiasm of the Bowery crowd is a testament to Enter Shikari’s loyal fan base and, importantly, their ability to put on a kick-ass live show. The live performance this band delivers is supreme – complete with glow sticks and a heart-felt rapport with the audience.

In December 2007 they embark on a West Coast tour from Portland to San Diego to celebrate the long-anticipated release of ‘Take To The Skies’. But if this tour is anything like their previous New York show, fans will be screaming every lyric back at the band, despite an official album release duration of only one month.

Enter Shikari formed while still in school in 2003. As soon as the summer came around, they climbed in the van and hit the road. They’ve pretty much never come home since. It seems nothing will stop them and they have no plans of doing such a thing. Catch the intensity and infamous notoriety that is, Enter Shikari.

Read what some people are saying about Enter Shikari:

“Genuine musical phenomena” – The Guardian (UK)

“Enter Shikari bring a fresh twist to the frequently botched dream of rocktronica. Where the Prodigy merged rave dynamics with cartoon punk tantrums, Shikari mesh hacking guitar riffs with serenely celestial synth-ripples…As fervent about dance culture’s hands-in-the-air rituals as punk and metai’s moshing and stage-diving…Shikari are all about the release of constructive aggression.” – Blender

“An immeasurably thrilling proposition, tonight Enter Shikari ruled – in front of their own crowd they’re going to slay” – NME

“Enter Shikari…have become the figureheads of a new anything-goes generation…Their marriage of both types of hardcore (techno and punk) and a flirtation with the trappings of rave culture have resulted in a unique combination that fuses the hard-hitting wide-eyed delivery of the Prodigy with the proto-screamo dynamics of Refused…” – Alternative Press

“One of the most inventive UK bands in years” – Uncut Magazine

“It’s as if the Prodigy got eaten by Muse’s crazy younger brother” – Observer Music Monthly

I’ve been excited about all of the press releases, reviews and Guest Music Blogger entries that have been coming our way, here at Band Weblogs. It’s great to be able to keep up with music news in one place and the best thing – it’s free. I would like to thank everyone who has been contributing their blog entries, and helping Band Weblogs to grow into the resourceful and informative music blog that it is today.

Musicians, bands, artists, music publicists, record companies, music fans and more have been submitting blog entries to Band Weblogs for free, for online distribution. All Guest Music Blogger entries are reviewed before publication and whether the entries are formal press releases about bands and their music or laid back music blog entries written by musicians, most submissions get published.

In today’s music climate, it’s important for bands to find unique ways to get their music heard. I’ve been a firm believer in musicians taking matters into their own hands when it comes to online promotion. Of course, the more help a band can get, the better, and adding music blog entries to Band Weblogs is just one more way to help spread the word about up and coming bands, new releases, reviews, music videos, music blogs and more.

Not only are the entries published on Band Weblogs, but some blog entries submitted by Guest Music Bloggers have been featured on quality news websites like Reuters, USA Today and Austin American Statesman. The more people that read the music blog entries equals more free promotion for bands!

Dave Tommo and I host the Band Weblogs Podcast Show which features ‘podsafe’ music by up and coming unsigned bands and signed bands. We love doing the show and it’s important to us that we play music by bands and artists that we really like. Band Weblogs Podcast Shows are aired on CBS owned KYOU Radio and 1550AM in San Francisco as well as distributed to podcast directories around the net. Podcasts are another way for musicians to get their music ‘out there’.

To keep up to date on the latest entries, you can subscribe to our RSS Feeds and add them to your favorite RSS news reader. You can also receive blog entries to your inbox.

Don’t you wish you had your own Pet Buffalo? Well… probably not, but I do have something better; a band with that peculiar (eccentric) name, and the best part about it is they are high-grade.

Their new release Independent Variable is loaded with emotionally drenched bluesy rock and folk tracks. The lead singer, Teri Hitt, has a voice that dares you to listen and then listen again. She beckons you with her smooth vibrato and you begin to fall into the words. Once you are in the middle of it all there is no turning back. It’s the kind of album I would want to make.

The music presented here is a combination of rock, blues and folk. It all leans more towards an earthy blues rock feel, but the folk element remains a constant thread running through each track and it serves as a jumping off point into the different styles. In addition to singing, Hitt plays the acoustic guitar while Christopher Mark (piano, vocals), Aaron Stephen Chu (electric guitars), Dave Walker (bass), and Andrew Shreve (drums) fill out group. Chu plays some smokin’ licks while the keyboards of Mark complement his stinging leads. And what would all of this great music be without a solid rhythm section to move it all along? The rhythm is spot-on courtesy of Walker and Shreve (spelling is similar to the early Santana drummer).

It is important to lead off with an energetic track, and that is the case here as “Free Yourself” churns out and gets your heart pumping with a driving organ, guitars, and rhythm section. This, however, does not set the precedence for the pace of the album. At times stepping back and mellowing out to sound more Folk-Americana and then reverting to a more upbeat and heavier blues-rock tone is the way this band goes about their work, with moods shifting as each track progresses. The steaming track “Silence” starts with more of a downbeat feel, and then has a crankin’ break at about 2:50 when Chu gets the opportunity to strut his stuff. This becomes common ground throughout this release.

It’s all good from beginning to end, and for this listener Independent Variable rates as a satisfying album that is worth many listens.

Daisy Goes Green have been slowly making their presence felt on the Manchester scene over the past 12 months. They’ve been busy, and this particularly sunny weekend in Derbyshire, England was no different.

The occasion was the Y-Not Festival, a small-but-growing independent three-day festival showcasing the best new talent around. So I packed my sunscreen and a family pack of Pot Noodles and headed out into the countryside to see what all the fuss was about. I wasn’t disappointed.

The band create a giant sound for a three-piece and what strikes you straight away is the presence and tightness they display in their performance. Comprised of brothers Rob and Will Robinson and lifelong friend, Rick Bevan, they seem to have an intuitive understanding and confidence in each other’s playing as they rattle through one barn-stormer after another.

Playing in the coveted ’sunset’ slot, the hypnotic rhythms and pulsating bassline of opening number “Inside Out” create the perfect soundtrack to the crimson-turning sky as the smoke machines and impressive light show kick into action. Suddenly everyone is paying attention and there is a real feeling in the crowd that the main event has begun.

Rick prowls the stage and demands attention with powerful vocals, while Rob’s harmonies add another dimension to the sound. From the ridiculously catchy “Lady of the Night” through spontaneous foot tapper “Mine Anyway” to the snarling set closer “SCALLY”, there is no let up and their 30-minute set seems to be over in a flash. Daisy Goes Green are a band that defy you to ignore them and on the evidence of this performance, it won’t be long before some of the industry big wigs start taking notice.

The Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female of 2003, Kellie Coffey, is back with a new independent album entitled ‘Walk On.’ The follow-up release to her debut album,‘When You Lie Next to Me,’ was produced by Wayne Kirkpatrick (Little Big Town) and features 12 tracks, 11 co-written by Kellie Coffey. The video for the first single, “I Would Die For That,” is exploding on YouTube with over 75,000 hits in only four weeks.

‘Walk On,’ is the kind of deep introspective album that most artists aspire to make. “We wrote songs about our life experience and what moved us,” Coffey said of her co-writers. “It was probably the purest creative experience of my life.” The new album represents more than one dream come true; Coffey became pregnant and gave birth to her baby boy during the writing and recording of the album.

Kellie Coffey was inspired to write the powerful ballad “I Would Die For That,” because of her own struggles with infertility. The video is garnering attention from around the globe as couples relate to her heartfelt, thought provoking lyrics and soaring vocals. “I’ve been humbled by the response and stories I’ve been told. This song is giving a voice to women and couples who are struggling to have a baby,” said Coffey.

From the gospel tinged ‘Walk On,’ to the playful and humorous “Everything She Never Wanted,” and “Bandwagon,” the album mirrors Kellie’s life. ‘Walk On’ is a soulful anthem for overcoming adversity. “Everything She Never Wanted” is a funny take on a driven career woman who finds that being a wife and mom, the things she never wanted to be, are what she really wanted to be all along.

“Bandwagon” takes a lighthearted look at the modern obsession of needing to be a part of the latest craze. From cellphones, to handbags, to designer coffees, to the latest diet, the lyrics make you laugh and think at the same time. With backing vocals by Dan Tyminski (Union Station, O Brother Where Art Thou) and a band made up of some of the best pickers in Nashville, this has the makings of an instant country classic.

The final cut on the album, “There You Go Again”, was recorded in one take. Almost unheard of in an age of computer assisted recording. Right after Kellie and co-writer/producer Wayne Kirkpatrick finished writing the song, they decided to cut a quick piano vocal demo. Months later when they were preparing to cut the master track, they listened down to the “demo” and decided not to touch the vocal or piano track they recorded in the inspired moments after writing the song. They simply called Jonathan Yudkin, Nashville’s premier fiddle player and violinist, to lay down a string quartet. The results are stunning.

Oklahoma native Kellie Coffey entered the country music scene in 2001 with her top 10 single, “When You Lie Next To Me,” which remained on the chart for over a year. Her album of the same name entered the country sales chart at #5. She followed that with the top 15 single, “At the End Of The Day.” Kellie Coffey toured with Kenny Chesney for over a year on his “Senoritas and Margaritas” tour and opened for George Strait on his 2004 tour. She received a Top New Country Female American Music Award nomination, and the ACM win in the same category. She has appeared on multiple ACM, CMA and CMT Shows.

‘Walk On’ is available online at www.kelliecoffey.com, CDBaby.com, Amazon.com, the iTunes Music Store and other download stores on the web.

Some weeks are better than other weeks. This is a great week for “The Road” which is a song off of Tim Young’s independent release RED which is available at timrocksweb.com.

It appears that a new model is developing and developing very fast. Where once AM and or FM radio were the vehicles to break new music now the Independent Podcasters are filling that vacuum pronto. Tim Young and his most recent record RED have been fortunate enough to appeal to a number of these 21st century DJ’s.

Nic Threadwell is the proud daddy of his homegrownpodcast which is based in the UK. His is a very lively collection of artists from the UK and the USA and also includes spoken word and poetry; which is another trend happening big time in the current world of podcasts. Nic has chosen to feature “The Road” on his program this week which can be found at homegrownpodcast.co.uk.

Apparently there must have been some mysterious communication going on from the UK to the USA because this week on Mike Stephen’s podcast, The Open Mike Cafe, Mike has also chosen to ride on “The Road” from RED. Mike produces his Open Mike Cafe once a week just like Nic and the Open Mike podcast can be found at openmikecafe.blogspot.com. Mike’s show is more focused on acoustic based independent releases but he also enjoys mixing up a diverse bag of sounds and interviews and poetry.

Some roads may be long and winding but this ‘road’ from Tim Young chooses a more direct path. Straight down that road as far as the eye can see…“where the ending is never painted on a sign.”

A week of great movement. Please support these podcasts by tuning in and enjoying the diversity of great independent music. This is all a brand new Road and it’s going somewhere unforgettable.

One of my favorite musician bloggers is Billy Morrison. Since 2004, he’s been updating his blog with juicy tidbits of information about his bands and daily activities. What’s really great to see is that after a lot of hard work, his new band Circus Diablo finally secured a deal with independent label Koch Entertainment. Their self titled debut album is set for release on July 3rd, 2007.

Before the band was signed, readers of Billy Morrison’s blog have been kept up to date from the beginning, of the journey of Circus Diablo. What started out as just having some fun and writing a couple of songs progressed to recording in the studio and eventually signing with Koch Entertainment. At one point Billy mentioned how difficult the music business can be. Even with his connections in the biz, it wasn’t as easy getting signed as some might think. Now with the green light, everything is a go and it’s all about the music and getting the word out about Circus Diablo.

Members of the Los Angeles based rock band include: Billy Morrison, vocals (Camp Freddy, former member of The Cult), Billy Duffy, lead guitar (The Cult), Ricky Warwick, rhythm guitar (former member of The Almighty) and Brett Scallions, bass (former member of Fuel). Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Camp Freddy) played drums on the debut album courtesy of RCA. Charles Ruggiero of Slunt, will play drums for their 2007 summer tour dates.

The band is confirmed for all 24 Ozzfest shows this summer, and has added headlining shows to their schedule, along with fellow Ozzfest band, Mondo Generator.

The Philadelphia based Junior Music Executive Program will sponsor the upcoming fifth annual Independent Music Conference, taking place this year in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend.

IMC Founder and Chair, Noel Ramos says, “I’m ecstatic to have this wonderful group participate in our community and vision.”

Jr Music Executive, founded by industry entrepreneurs Aisha Winfield and Shani Gonzales, is an entertainment industry based initiative created to encourage high school and college students to go to school, graduate, and be successful by exposing them to careers in the music business. The company endeavors to provide young people with information, education, industry networking and internship opportunities essential to minimizing the barriers-to-entry and attaining a successful entrance into the business of entertainment. For more information about Jr Music Executive, please visit www.jrmusicexec.com.

When asked about the sponsorship, Aisha Winfield noted, “This conference provides one of a kind opportunities for our students to get involved, network, and learn. The quality of the information provided at the conference and the passion of the IMC organizers was a perfect match for Jr Music Executive. Students often want to know how to make money in the music business, the IMC is offering 3 full days of answers.”

InterMixx.com is the parent company that presents the Independent Music Conference (IMC’07), the online independent music store IndieGate.com and is the publisher of InterMixx independent music magazine, one of the first independent music magazines since 1988. The IMC evolved from a desire to build a trustworthy network for artists within the indie community along with raising awareness, support and value for independent music. The first IMC took place in 2003 and IMC ‘07 will be the sixth conference that InterMixx has presented. Other IMC events are also planned for Dallas, Los Angeles and Charleston, WV.

IMC President and founder, Noel Ramos has helped to create and establish credibility for the indie community in his nearly twenty year publishing career. In addition to printing InterMixx, one of the oldest national magazines devoted to indie music, in the early 90’s Ramos developed the IndieList, the first independent music discussion group online, long before MySpace became a household name.

William Nash is Steelspring and Better Living is an eight-track album spilling over with emotion and character that comes from the tip of his toes. Nash offers those that enjoy bands like REM, Chris Issak, and Jeff Buckley, a joyous musical ride on the backcountry road of life.

I asked Nash for the musician’s credits and he told me that he played all the instruments and added the drum programming and orchestration. I was beside myself because I thought otherwise. It is getting harder to distinguish between real instruments and programs these days, unless of course you are a professional musician with a trained ear to hear the difference immediately.

Although Steelspring’s music is primarily rock and folk, aspects of country, blues, and Americana come seeping through the nooks and crannies. You will also hear some finely crafted guitar work featuring some incredibly good slide playing. Al Stewart came to mind more than once as this CD played but then as I enjoyed “Crickets,” Nash’s soft vocal style and sense of melody reminded me of Eddie Rabbitt.

When “All Through The Night” started on the first spin of this album I was not too sure about Nash’s voice, I knew it was different, not your typical vocal style that you could ease right into quickly. As I took in all this music, I found that the musicianship was top notch. Collectively the entire scope of this work hit me on the third listen. I found myself captured by Nash’s voice, the melodic sensibility of it all, and again, the striking musical content.

It is interesting how you start off with a CD then learn to love it once you give it a fair shot, however a certain element and quality must be present before you do give it that opportunity. All of that was there and more on this stand up group of songs. Better Living through good music – what a great idea!

5. Crickets (3:41)
6. Hilinger And Thirst (3:52)

The other night I was up late watching Disturbing Behavior (1998) starring Katie Holmes. It’s a pretty good movie as far as thrillers go. ‘Teens turn bad’ type of flick. The soundtrack which includes The Flys’ “Got You (Where I Want You)” single is what caught my attention the most though. I hadn’t heard that song in years.

Throughout the movie I kept trying to remember who the band was that did that song. I was thinking that it sounded a little bit like Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, but had to wait for the credits to roll to find out that it was The Flys. The singer has a great voice and I’ve always really liked that song. Of course me being the curious person that I am had to find out what has happened to the band since their “Got You (Where I Want You)” mega hit.

Watch The Flys video for “Got You (Where I Want You)”

After searching around the net a bit I found that The Flys, based in Hollywood, were together from 1994-2002. Adam Paskowitz is the singer with the cool voice and apparently now fronts his new LA rock band, Jetliner.

Jetliner is often compared to Queen and listening to their tracks up on Myspace I can hear why. Adam Paskowitz still sounds great and it’s good to hear him singing new songs. They’ve got a few quotes up on their Myspace page from some familiar names:

“[Jetliner] have been likened to Queen on their new album ‘Space Station’.” — Brian May, QUEENONLINE.COM

“I like bands that have a concept, a bit of drama. Queen is that sort of band; they had complex songs with a lot of parts to them. Jetliner is that kind of band too.” — Steve Jones of THE SEX PISTOLS

“…you’d think you were listening to Queen, with the piano and the harmonies. They also do a great cover of Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars’.” — THE NEW YORK TIMES

Jeliner’s independent 12 track album release Space Station is available for purchase in their online store. You can catch them occasionally playing live around LA and the Sunset Strip. For more information go to their websites:

W.E. Fest is a five day, totally DIY, volunteer-run extravaganza that always takes place during the week of Memorial Day Weekend. Despite being small, homespun and intentionally under the radar for the past decade, W.E. Fest has garnered an uncanny reputation for discovering new talent. Lamb Of God, Mae, The Dismemberment Plan, The Mooney Suzuki, Anthony Rossomando from The Dirty Pretty Things, Alison Mosshart from The Kills, Beefcake The Mighty from GWAR, James Hanna from Asobi Seksu, ASG, and many, many others are all W.E. Fest vets.

The first W.E. Fest was co-founded by current Senior Director and underground art punk Kenyata Sullivan in 1996 to showcase genuinely unknown talent and build community within the indie scene. Only small indie label and unsigned bands are allowed to play. Tickets are “intentionally ridiculous” at just $1 a day. This year the festival will make a return to its roots by also featuring films, zines, comics and other DIY arts projects.

Organic Entertainment is a boutique service firm, multi-tiered entertainment group and newly turned record label committed to the big picture growth of independent record labels and recording artists who compete for market share with major labels. With great understanding of the new market leverage of indies, Organic creates unique business models for artists that employ traditional grass roots methods complemented by distinctive communications strategies aimed at penetrating an oversaturated and competitive marketplace.
