UK studio legend John Leckie discusses Portico Quartet's 'Isla' Sessions at Abbey Road
"Portico Quartet's music is difficult to define," says famed producer John Leckie who has helmed early recordings by everyone from Public Image Ltd and XTC, to Radiohead and My Morning Jacket.
That's an understatement.
John Leckie produced the Mercury Prize-nominated Portico Quartet's new album 'Isla' (August 31 / Real World) in the legendary Studio Two at Abbey Road.

Portico Quartet consists of four young men from East London who share a penchant for unusual rhythms and even more unusual instruments. Their sound is distinctive for its use of the Hang, a pitched percussion instrument reminiscent of a gamelan or Tibetan prayer bells.
In order to capture the true energy of the music, Leckie recorded the band live in the studio with minimal overdubs.
"They like to see each other's expressions and each other's movements," he says. "Abbey Road is perfect for that because you can arrange the musicians in a circle and the room just resonates and fills with the sound."
Only a room like that could properly capture the rich textures and delicate nuances of 'Isla,' which has already been released to glowing praise in the U.K.
