Tony Adamo - Straight Up Deal [5/5 max perf/sound] O’s Notes: Tony sings blues backed by jazzy rhythms. The presence of Neil Larsen (organ) gives things a cool jazz feel. He moves from traditional blues to classic ballads like “Winelight” where he’s shadowed by Ernie Watts on sax. They cook on “Milestones” with Eddie Henderson handling trumpet duties and a nice drum solo from Paul von Wageningen before getting funky with “Groove Therapy”. Tony keeps things interesting with vocal percussion on “Hey Lou”, crooning on “Stolen Moments” and scatting on “Speak Low” capping a fine effort.
The key to great listening is variety and great song selection. — D. Oscar Groomes
