Up-and-coming Los Angeles-based group Nightmare and the Cat - the new project from London-bred Sam Stewart (formerly of British rockers Blondelle), brother Django (ex-Midnight Squires) - is set to release their debut self-titled EP on July 12, 2011.
The five-song EP, which includes five bonus live performance videos, is produced by Dan Burns (Andrew WK, Surfer Blood) and Grammy Award-winner Glen Ballard (Alanis Morrisette, Dave Matthews Band) and will be available via all online retailers.
The band is fresh off a series of high-profile performances including shows at SXSW and the New Limb residency at Los Angeles' Three Clubs.
The Huffington Post raves that "Django has a great voice; Samuel can really play, and the three part harmonies with band member Claire Acey are wonderful."
Receiving numerous comparisons to Jeff Buckley, the group's live performances are augmented by their collaboration with Los Angeles underground pop artist and illustrator Gary Baseman who creates his artwork live during the band's set and made the EP's cover art.
"At first I was supposed to draw on a Wacom tablet," Baseman notes, "but we decided to revert to old-school art-making." Sam adds that the band aims to be "a complete marriage between music and visual art. So far he's painted on giant canvases behind us while we played. And he's also painted all over Django while he's been singing. We've performed at his art opening in NYC, he's performed at many of our shows."
Brothers Sam and Django have performed and recorded music since a young age. Growing up in a musical family - the two are the sons of Eurythmics Dave Stewart and Bananarama's Siobhan Fahey - the pair draw on diverse influences ranging from James Brown and the Rolling Stones to the Pixies.
Django notes, "All I do is sing and think about music. People say they can always hear me coming up the street or down the corridor. That's something that will be going on until the day I die."
"…haunting harmonies and stripped-down melodies are charged with a rare, biting innocence." - Flavorpill
"Nightmare and the Cat are a superb find; a blend with a rough and ready indie drive, a blues edge, and still the sensitivity of a relatively recently formed musical package." - Contact Music
