Eighteen Nightmares At The Lux

Eighteen Nightmares At The Lux have streamed new track “6ft 6” this December as a taster for their forthcoming four-track EP ‘PIG’, out in early 2014.

Formed in London in 2011, Eighteen Nightmares At The Lux have steadily carved out a niche sound for themselves by trading in Kraut-rock and psychedelic influences for a sound that encapsulates elements of horrorcore a ‘la early Cramps, psychobilly and the frenetic garage punk of 80’s Matchbox B-Line Disaster.

“6ft 6”, the first taster released from the new EP, perfectly showcases the band’s unique style with its fucked-up marriage of dramatic vocals, guitars that balance between deranged surf-punk and sinister garage riffs, and a rhythm section as unpredictable as the band’s influences.

Completely disregarding safer retro influences and gravitating towards more obscure sounds, Eighteen Nightmares At The Lux have found themselves pioneering the next wave of UK-based acts trading substance over style. It’s no surprise then that already in their career they frequently share stages with fellow envelope-pushers like Nicole Saboune, Bad For Lazarus, God Damn, Ashestoangels, LOOM and classic Liverpudian Art Punk band Deaf School.

In grooming their own unique sound, the band’s new ‘PIG’ EP was produced and mixed by the band themselves and recorded at Bowerman Studios. ‘PIG’ will be released on Dust Devil Sounds in February 2014.

“Debuached psychobilly thrills with no small amount of style and grace” Clash Magazine

“Rock ‘n’ roll with scuzz and swagger thrown in” DIY

“More than an undead whiff of The Cramps about it” The Fly

“The Cramps and the Sonics have grandchildren. Nasty ones!” Les Inrocks

Jamestown Revival

Jamestown Revival have announced a string of tour dates around the west coast this December. The band will be touring beginning on December 8, 2013 in San Diego at Lestats, before playing in Los Angeles on December 10 at the Troubadour. The tour continues with dates in San Francisco, Seattle, and other cities, before ending on December 21 in Denver at the Bluebird Theater. For the details of the itinerary, see below.

Jamestown Revival are touring in support of their most recent release, The California EP. The EP features three new songs and one cover, all self-produced by the band. The EP provides a taste of what’s to come on the band’s upcoming debut album, to be released next year. One such song is “California (Cast Iron Soul),” which lends its name to the EP, and is a fitting ode to The Golden State.

Stream Jamestown Revival – “California (Cast Iron Soul)”:

Jamestown Revival is made up of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance, two close friends who grew up together in the small Texas town of Magnolia. From a young age, they shared a love for music as well as the outdoors. About an hour north of Magnolia, TX, there was some old family land with a dilapidated ranch house where they spent the better part of their adolescence.

At one point or another, music from Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Everly Brothers, to fellow Texans Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, and Stevie Ray Vaughan found its way through an old pair of speakers that sat on the back porch. The pair spent the day exploring that thousand-acre plot of land, and when the sun went down they took to the records of the songwriters and bands that inspired them.

At the age of 22, they moved to Austin and began to craft a sound of their own. Deeply rooted in harmony, they merged the sounds of the South with classic American, and Western rock. Looking for adventure, as well as a change of pace, they eventually made the decision to head west and make the move to Los Angeles, CA. There, the duo wrote the songs that would become The California EP and their upcoming full-length debut.

In order to capture the spirit of the music, the two found a log cabin high within the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The pair, along with their band and engineer, set out to convert it in to a temporary recording studio. With wild moose right outside the window, and aspen leaves spinning in the wind, they tracked 14 songs. Performed live, with no headphones, and entirely to tape, the process captured the moments in the room.

Elvis Costello and The Roots announce release of Remix EP on November 29th

Elvis Costello and The Roots have announced the release of Wise Up: Thought – Remixes and Reworks. The collection serves as the remix EP companion to the album Wise Up Ghost, the genre-defying collaborative tour de force from Elvis Costello and The Roots that was released earlier this year.

The EP will be released as an exclusive CD release as part of Record Store Days’s “Back To Black Friday” initiative on Friday, November 29, 2013 and available only via the participating independent retailers.

On the album, Costello and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson stirred a musical pot of gumbo, mixing together elements of soul, funk, hip hop, punk, and afro beat. Wise Up: Thought is a deconstructive plate of their soul stew and features genre-specific remixes and reworks that play off those included in the album’s sonic landscape.

J Dilla disciple and Stones Throw Records beat maker/drummer Karriem Riggins contributes four remixes on the hip hop front. Riggins’ remix of “Cinco Minutos Con Vos” features the Roots rapper Black Thought going toe to toe with Costello as he contributes his own brand of lyrical wordplay. Daptone Records artist Antibalas (of Fela! the Musical fame) contributes an afro beat reworking of lead single “Walk Us Uptown” while Menahan Street Band (a collective featuring members of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and El Michaels Affair) come with the Memphis-to-Muscle Schoals slow funk flavor in their rework of the song “Tripwire”.

The collection is available exclusively via Blue Note Records.

TRACKLIST:
1. CINCO Minutos Con Vos – Karriem Riggins Remix Featuring Black Thought (4:09)
2. SUGAR Won’t Work – Karriem Riggins beat interlude (0:49)

Active Child is excited to announce the first remix off his recent EP, Rapor.

The Romanian producer LIAR has remixed standout track “Subtle (Ft. Mikky Ekko).” He has remixed everyone from Foals to SOHN and The XX and just put out a new record on Symbols Recordings called Spirewards.

Active Child just released a series of videos about the making of the EP, which you can watch below. He is currently in the studio working on an LP due out this Spring.

Active Child – Making the Rapor EP [Trailer] video:

Pat Grossi, better known as Active Child, is proud to announce Rapor EP, his first release since the critically acclaimed full length debut, You Are All I See. Released on October 22nd via Vagrant Records, the six-song EP is a culmination of Grossi’s heartfelt journey around the world in support of You Are All I See and an introspective year spent writing at his home studio, Rapor, from which he derived the title and inspiration for his forthcoming release. The EP is now available to stream on Active Child’s new Pro Partner profile on SoundCloud.

“The house is made up almost entirely of glass, designed by the architects Buff and Hensman as their personal refuge from the chaos of LA. Inside the studio you can feel the sun pouring through the skylights and the mountains wrapping around on all sides. They named it Rapor, Ra meaning sun and Por meaning house. Sometimes I would spend weeks alone at home writing without leaving or having visitors. It was during those periods that I realized how important that space was to me creatively. I relied on that solitude.”

Emerging from Rapor with an inspired and incredibly personal collection of songs, Grossi moved to Heavy Duty Studios in Burbank, CA over the summer of 2013 to work with producers Kevin Seaton (Major Lazer, Snoop Lion) and Nick Ruth (Mikky Ekko, Night Terrors of 1979) to complete his vision, which includes vocal features from contemporaries and friends Mikky Ekko and Ellie Goulding.

Active Child – “Subtle” (featuring Mikky Ekko):

Mikky Ekko appears on “Subtle” the EP’s first single and is described by Pitchfork as “leaning hard on aggressive 1980s synth-pop textures, with vocalist Mikky Ekko on hand to deliver some full-throated forcefulness contrasting with Grossi’s always-floating falsetto.” Goulding who covered Grossi’s stand out “Hanging On” on her current release Halcyon is featured on the EP’s fourth track “Silhouette” which showcases the two artists soaring falsettos in duet.

Grossi will tour this fall with support from JMSN and then return home to put the finishing touches on his follow up album, due out mid 2014.

Rapor Tracklisting:

1. She Cut Me
2. Subtle (Feat. Mikky Ekko)
3. Feeling is Gone
4. Silhouette (Feat. Ellie Goulding)
5. Calling in the Name of Love
6. Evening Ceremony

Playing Oxford City Music Festival Acoustic Show

Oxford, UK based duo Purple May have announced their debut EP ‘Where Are We Going?’ released on December 2, 2013.

The self-released 5 track EP will be available on iTunes and Amazon.

Purple May members Dave Tomlinson (vocals/guitar/harmonica) and Jenny May (vocals) recorded ‘Where Are We Going?’ with Nick Moorbath at Evolution Studios in Oxford.

“We had heard great things about Nick, so we decided to venture outside of the home studio environment to record the new EP.” says Jenny May.

Adds Tomlinson, “We have found in the past that recording in environments which are out of our usual comfort zone help to create a much more colourful version of what we would have produced in our home studio. As for playing live we are enjoying the process of experiencing our songs growing and the sound improving as we become more confident with our new tunes through various live situations.”

Collaborating together on musical projects for over ten years, Tomlinson and May formed Purple May in early 2013. Their music is a blend of tight vocal harmonies, insightful songwriting and infectious melodies.

‘Where Are We Going?’ tracklist:

The August List – High Town Crow EP [Video]

The August List
High Town Crow is the new EP from husband and wife duo Martin and Kerraleigh Child AKA The August List.

The August List

‘High Town Crow EP’ Out Now via Ubiquity Project Records

“It’s a rare West Country husband-and-wife duo that can pull off the knack of sounding simultaneously like a vintage Louisiana jug band and at the same time very much like themselves.” – Tom Robinson BBC 6Music

“They began performing together three years ago – a decision that appears to be paying rich dividends from the evidence of this glorious slice of alt-country” – For Folk’s Sake

“Stripped down roots-inspired music that stylistically has its core in folk and country, but it’s sights set a little further afield also” – Americana UK

High Town Crow is the new EP from self-proclaimed ‘backwards country porch-folk’ husband and wife duo Martin and Kerraleigh Child AKA The August List.

Hailing from Dorset and now residing in Oxfordshire, the new EP was released via Reading based label/collective Ubiquity Project Records on October 26th 2013.

A couple since 2005, it was another five years into their relationship before they started writing and performing music together. Taking their cue from neo-traditionalists such as The White Stripes and Holly Golightly they built around the bare bones of their songs with just the two of them, with acoustic guitar, voice, harmonica and foot percussion.

Their debut EP, Handsome Skin, captured their rootsy and ragged sound, from the blues stomp of “Forty-Rod of Lightnin” to the punky thrash of “Death Penalty” and the closing “Homeland” with its mournful pedal steel guitar and softer, longing tone to Kerraleigh’s voice.

High Town Crow focuses more intently on a particular mood, a sound and a space. Taking its cue from where the last EP left off, the new work builds on their more introspective folk side: “the songs we have been writing since Handsome Skin have been less frenetic but more intense perhaps.”

The August List – “All To Break” video:

The tracks were again recorded across Silver Street Studios in Reading and The Ladder Factory Studios in Swindon, with Graeme Rawson and George Rowe respectively. Opening with “All To Break” we are once more confronted with Kerraleigh’s battle-ready vocal, rich in the authentic twangs and yelps of Emmylou Harris et al. Yet this time around there is a restraint in her delivery, the gentle percussion drawing the listener in closer.

The loping, reverb-drenched “Blood Harmony” follows, almost calling to mind Jenny Lewis covering The Jesus & Mary Chain! “A Song For Any State” with lead vocals by Martin proves their most poignant moment before the gloriously stormy narrative of the title-track builds towards a satisfying, foot-stomping finale, made all the more powerful for having us wait.

The August List bring together the modern day alt-country of Wilco, The Felice Brothers and The Handsome Family with a love and respect for the best of the old guard, the Dylans and the Youngs, returning the genre to its former heart and soul.
