Harry Belafonte documentary Sing Your Song + autobiography, album, book signings

Harry Belafonte - Sing Your Song: The Music

To coincide with the HBO premiere of the critically acclaimed Harry Belafonte documentary Sing Your Song and the release of his long-awaited Knopf Books autobiography, My Song, SONY Masterworks releases the companion album Sing Your Song: The Music, available October 4, 2011.

A compilation of the artist's most treasured recordings, Sing Your Song: The Music serves as a chronological musical narration of the film and book, following the extraordinary musical milestones of Belafonte's incomparable career.

During the course of an inspiring life that has paralleled the American civil rights movement, artist and crusader Harry Belafonte has used his humanitarian influence to advance causes and social justice, while forging a unique career punctuated by prestigious awards and industry firsts.

A groundbreaking singer, actor and activist, Belafonte rose to fame in the U.S. in spite of segregation and crossed over into mainstream America on his way to international stardom.

His hit 1956 album, Calypso, made him the first artist in history to sell over a million LPs and spawned the smash single "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)."

Directed by Susan Rostock ("The Long Way Home") and produced by Michael Cohl (Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark), the documentary Sing Your Song, which premieres on HBO on October 17, depicts Belafonte as a tireless activist in the civil rights movement, who worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and later participated in the struggle against African apartheid.

The book, My Song, available on October 11, co-written with Michael Shnayerson, tells Belafonte's story from his poverty-ridden childhood to his meteoric rise to fame and his lifelong involvement at the heart of the civil rights movement and countless other social causes.

Sing Your Song was presented at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and the 2011 Berlin Film Festival, as well as the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.

On October 15th it will be presented at the Hamptons Film Festival.

Harry will appear on Piers Morgan Tonight, Morning Joe, Charlie Rose, Colbert Report and Tavis Smiley to talk about the project.
