‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ is the 22nd album from Marianne Faithfull and was recorded in December 2007 in NYC at the famous Sear Sound recording studio. It’s the third album of Marianne’s to be produced by Hal Willner (the others being ‘Strange Weather’ and ‘Blazing Away’).

Marianne Faithfull on amazon.co.uk

Marianne Faithfull on amazon.com

Marianne and Hal have been close friends since they met, back in 1982, and have worked together on many different project over the years, most recently on three songs from Marianne’s acclaimed last album ‘Before The Poison’, but ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ is a collection of songs written by others and interpreted by Marianne.

When ‘Strange Weather’ was released in 1987, it was quickly hailed as one of Marianne’s finest recordings, so this time around the challenge was high: Marianne and Hal had to make an album that was at least as good. Both artists have risen to the challenge beautifully: they achieve a timeless recording.

All the songs have been chosen by Marianne and Hal, and range from Billie Holiday’s “Solitude” to “The Crane Wife” by current band The Decemberists. Other tracks are “Sing Me Back Home” by Merle Haggard, “Children of Stone” by Espers, the title track “Easy Come, Easy Go Blues” by Bessie Smith, Morrissey’s “Dear God Please Help Me”, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles “Ohh Baby Baby”, Dolly Parton’s “Down from Dover” and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s “Salvation”.

‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ also includes some interesting guest vocalists; Keith Richards appears on the aforementioned “Sing Me Back Home”, Anthony Hegarty on “Ohh Baby Baby” and Jarvis Cocker on Sondheims’s “Somewhere”.

Other guest appearances on the album come from Rufus Wainwright who contributes vocals to the powerful “Children of Stone” while his aunt and mother; Kate and Anna McGarrigle enchant on the “The Flandyke Shore”.

Warren Ellis plays his magic violin on three songs, and Nick Cave lends some vocals to “The Crane Wife”. Sean Lennon and Teddy Thompson play guitar on a couple of the tracks, and Chan Marshall of Cat Power harmonizes on “Hold On, Hold On”.

The album was recorded live in the oldest recording studio in Manhattan, the famous Sear Sound. The arrangements are by Cohen Bernstein and Weinberg Goldstein and were done specifically for Marianne. The string and horn sections were led by L. Picket, and the band includes Marc Ribot, Greg Cohen, Rob Burger, Barry Reynolds and Jim White.

Very few takes were needed, in fact some of the songs were done in a single take (London sound engineers in the 60s use to call her Marianne ‘one take’ Faithfull). There are very few overdubs on this recording.

The Tour

After the launch of the album, a short tour of the main capital cities of Europe will take place throughout in the spring of 2009. Marianne will recreate ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ onstage using the same band as the recording sessions, complete with a horn and string section. As well as the new material, Marianne will be performing a selection of hits from her rich back catalogue; all in all, it promises to be a fantastic show.

Will Young is punching up some big numbers with new single “Changes”. After an incredible 10,000 plays on UK radio, the track is #1 in the national airplay chart and #4 in the regional airplay charts. We’re expecting a top ten chart entry this weekend, with CD, video and digital bundle formats still to come on Monday. Listen out for Will on Jonathan Ross’ Radio 2 show this weekend. He also plays London’s Cadogan Hall next Thursday September 25th, 2008.

Stereophonics‘ new single “You’re My Star” received an exclusive first spin on Chris Moyles’ breakfast show Wednesday morning. Kelly was on top form despite coming straight from the band’s show at L.A.’s Henry Fonda theatre. Just a few more stops to go on the North American tour now, with the UK tour kicking off in December.

Primal Scream were the big winners at last night’s Vodafone Live Music Awards, scooping two prizes: “Best Live Act” and “Outstanding Contribution to Live Music”.

Mark Ronson, modelling a fantastic new pair of specs, walked away with “Best Live Male”, while Will Young and Primal Scream got the night’s biggest cheers for their performances.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss were also winners last night, as the acclaimed duo were awarded “Album of the Year” and “Group of the Year” at Nashville’s Annual Americana Music Awards.

Anyone spotted Bill Bailey in the dole queue yet? Mark Ronson has pinched his seat on Never Mind The Buzzcocks for the new season opener, airing Thursday October 2nd on BBC2. Mark was great fun when he appeared as a guest in the last series, this should be even better.

Ship ahoy! Martha Wainwright is preparing for her October UK tour with a trip to Greenland, courtesy of the Cape Farewell project. Joining a crew that includes KT Tunstall, Feist, Jarvis Cocker and Robyn Hitchcock, Martha will see the impact of global warming at close quarters. New single “Comin’ Tonight” is out November 3rd, 2008.

Never ones to be outdone, Guillemots are planning a bit of potholing on their upcoming UK tour. The band play a series of unconventional November dates in caves, libraries and converted cinemas. Before then, it’s Wednesday’s premier of Simon Pegg’s new film How To Lose Friends & Alienate People, with the band playing the rooftop after party at Shoreditch House. New double A-side single “Kriss Kross / Clarion” is out Monday.

Teddy Thompson starts his UK tour next week, playing four headline dates before heading off to join James Blunt on his October arena tour. More Teddy headline dates coming up in January.

We think Aimee Mann should be made an honorary Englishwoman, after listing Elton John and Boddingtons as two of her greatest passions on ITV1’s “Soundtrack To My Life” last night. She gave a great interview, and also performed “Freeway” from her latest album. “@#%&! Smilers”. Look out for UK headline dates in October.

Aimee’s not the only one recognising her heroes – our very own Paolo Nutini is one of only twelve Celtic fanatics featured in the club’s forthcoming “Celtic Opus”.
I’ve been intrigued by Teddy Thompson, not only because of his talent, but because of his ability to capture a rustic and classic sound that has subtly eased into the realm of mainstream music.

It’s also good to see true musicianship is still alive and well in the 21st century. Sometimes it’s difficult to see musical camaraderie amongst the commercialization of music. Teddy is the son of musicians Richard and Linda Thompson and over the years has collaborated – and harmonized – with both of his parents, Rufus and Martha Wainwright and many others. In my opinion, he is a great example of what true musicianship is.

Read the exclusive interview for Band Weblogs:

Jenny May: Where have you found to be the best place to write songs?

Teddy Thompson: I find that the place has little to do with it, it’s the state of mind. I don’t get a lot of writing done at home but that’s because I’m traveling a lot and when I am home it’s relaxation time. So, as long as I put my mind to it and sit down to work, I can be anywhere. It does end up being hotel rooms an awful lot.

Is there a show that you played that stands out as being a favorite?

I’ve had wonderful moments on stage but I’m always sort of waiting for the great performance to come. Where everything goes brilliantly and I have a transcendent experience. It hasn’t quite happened yet so I’m still waiting for my favorite show…

You’ve worked with many wonderful artists over the years. Are there times when they’ve inspired you when coming up with song/music ideas? If so, how did their inspiration effect your music?

Yes, it’s hard to say exactly how that works. I think it’s mostly subliminal for me. We naturally absorb what’s going on around us and later on it may influence your own writing.

With the artists that you’ve worked with, there seems to be a warm community of family and friends around you which reminds me of the Carter/Cash years – something that I don’t seen very often in music. How do you think camaraderie amongst musicians has changed throughout the years?

It’s great to have friends and family in the same business, I can’t imagine what it would be like to be the only musical person in your town and family as is the case for most musicians.. But as far as a musical community, there have certainly been lots of those – LA’s Laurel Canyon in the 70’s must have been pretty cool!

Is there a musical genre that you would one day like to venture into that you haven’t yet?

I’d like to make a traditional folk record someday.

Do you enjoy solitude?

Very much. I find it hard to spend an extended period of time with anyone.

Do you prefer romantic or political songs?

Romantic.

Who would you like to record with that you haven’t yet?

Nobody living. LOADS of dead people! Some sort of undead jam session would be really great.

Who is your favorite male/female duet and which song?

At the moment it’s Robert Plant and Alison Krauss doing that Everly Bros song.

You’ve had songs in movies – have you ever acted in any films?

NO, acting is like, totally hard.

Any projects planned outside of music?

I am working on decorating my new apartment.

What is your idea of the best way to chill out at the end of a long tour?

I always think that it would be good to take a real vacation on a beach somewhere and truly relax but inevitably, I just want to spend time at home after being away so long.

Who is your favorite country artist of all time?

Hank Williams.

“This is a happy record,” Teddy Thompson says of his new album ‘A Piece of What You Need’. “Well, maybe not happy, but upbeat. Actually, maybe not upbeat, but it does have some up-tempo songs! Anyway, it’s as close as I’ve gotten to making the record I’ve always wanted to make.”

‘A Piece of What You Need’ is out now, via Verve Forecast.

Indeed, happy or not, ‘A Piece of What You Need’, Teddy Thompson’s fourth album overall and his third for Verve, is the London-born, New York-based artist’s most ambitious and accomplished effort to date, showcasing his formidable vocal, songwriting and guitar talents while venturing into rewarding new musical and lyrical territory.

Download the superb “In My Arms” MP3

Thompson’s trademark blend of catchy songcraft, pensive emotional insight and good-natured black humor is present on such new tunes as “In My Arms,” “What’s This?!!,” “Don’t Know What I Was Thinking” and the bittersweetly fatalistic “Turning the Gun On Myself.”

The album’s effortless pop sensibility is matched by a playful sonic palette that incorporates such aural surprises as the careening brass band on “Can’t Sing Straight” and “One of These Days,” or the Hitchcockian orchestral rushes that haunt the cinematic “Jonathan’s Book.”

‘A Piece of What You Need’ is a landmark for an artist whose creative restlessness continues to yield deeply compelling musical results. Thompson’s sense of purpose — and sense of humor — are reflected in the song title that provides the album’s name.
