The Fullertons review – LIVE at The Jericho Tavern, Oxford (one to watch)

The Fullertons

Last week I had the pleasure of watching up and coming band The Fullertons play at The Jericho Tavern in Oxford.

They look and sound great – and could easily have been included in the Glastonbury lineup. Their songs are tight, energetic and the keyboard adds a nice touch to their indie/pop sound.

They’ve got the full package for mainstream success.

More information about The Fullertons:

“Halfway Out” is the infectious debut single from newcomers The Fullertons. The Watford based four piece are set to inject a well needed boost of energy back into the music scene.

The Fullertons are brothers David (vocals / guitar) and Chris Chanell (keys / vocals / guitar), Rik Blake (bass/vocals) and Rich Iles (drums).

The songs, laden with soaring vocal harmonies and timeless pop hooks, trace a lineage that takes in the driving rhythm of the Zombies, the swirling energy of The Stranglers and dusts it all off with a nod to Supergrass.

The band have already enjoyed the support of Music Week, Channelfly, XFM – recent antics while recording the video for their single also ended up with coverage in the Sunday Mirror! However, theirs is not the tabloid lifestyle just yet (!), as they are too busy building up those motorway miles supporting the likes of Good Shoes, Vincent Vincent And The Villains, The Displacements and Blood Red Shoes.

They have been tearing up sold-out venues around the country for the past year with their vibrant performances and infectious song writing nous, and will continue to do so on their forthcoming dates. “Halfway Out” was released by Sons of Stereo on the 23rd June, 2008 backed with “Find Your Own Way Out” and “Rule Of Thumb”.

Denise Lopez “Don’t You Wanna Be Mine” review

Denise Lopez

I’ve been listening to the Denise Lopez “Don’t You Wanna Be Mine” dance single and remixes set for release 16th June, 2008 on House Trained Records. I don’t recall hearing the track when it was originally released in the US in 1990, but that was awhile ago…and it hasn’t really received much airplay since then.

Apparently, though, “Don’t You Wanna Be Mine” was an underground dance anthem here in the UK. I’m actually quite surprised that it only reached #86 on the Billboard Dance Chart. Even with the help from famous production duo Robert Clivilles and (the late) David Cole from C&C Music Factory – which was a BIG name back then – it still didn’t come anywhere near top 10 or even top 20.

“Don’t You Wanna Be Mine” is a great dance track and Denise Lopez’s vocals are top notch. It’s good to see that it’s getting another chance with the release of a fresh modern remix in June, and is sure to be a huge hit in the clubs this summer.

DJ Disciple “Work It Out” review

DJ Disciple

DJ Disciple aka David Banks started out playing underground parties in New York, and since then has become one of the busiest DJs in the world. He’s worked in more clubs in the UK than any American DJ before, and has played clubs around the world.

Not only is DJ Disciple busy being a traveling DJ, his work has appeared in movies, he’s done remixes for several artists and more recently, his latest single, “Work It Out” has been receiving airplay on Radio 1 as well as being played by internationally acclaimed DJs.

“Work It Out” is the debut single set for release in the UK on House Trained Records June 2, 2008. The song features Dawn Tallman and the single includes funky mixes by Mischa Daniels, Klaas, Whelan & Di Scala and more. I’m really digging the Klaas Mix and the Allister Whitehead Full Circle Remix.

Something tells me that those who don’t frequent the clubs on a regular basis are going to start hearing more from DJ Disciple. He’s already been played on UK radio, and now with the “Work It Out” release and video to go with it, this song will be his intro into many more people’s homes – and cars this summer 2008.

For some reason, the DJ life has always been a mystery to me, and an interesting topic of conversation amongst fellow musicians. A few years ago it seemed there were more bands feeling the pressure of DJs squeezing onto their turf…but over time I think the dust may have settled a bit and some musicians are even out there DJing themselves, when they’re not playing music. Personally, I think it would be great to work with a DJ someday – it would be interesting to hear some of my songs remixed by a pro!

Anyone with the opportunity to go to a club where DJ Disciple is playing should. Throw away any inhibitions that you may have and just lose yourself to the music!

UB40 Twentyfourseven album review (5 song sampler)

UB40 Twentyfourseven

I’ve got in my CD player a 5 song sampler of the new UB40 album, Twentyfourseven, which is released June 16th, 2008. The songs that I’m listening to now are some of the best that I’ve heard from UB40.

Over the years, I was never able to acquire a taste for the band, although there have been many people in my life who have been fans of UB40…they never connected with me. Until now.

“Dance Until The Morning Light” with Maxi Priest and featuring DJ Rapper Truth and “Lost and Found” are the tracks on the upcoming double A sided single released in the UK on June 9th. This will be their first single from Twentyfourseven.

The songs are great choices for a first release. With Maxi Priest singing, along with the familiar sample loop of Desmond Dekker and the Aces’ hit “Israelites”, the upbeat, sure to be a club favorite, “Dance Until The Morning Light” is classic. The vocal melody on “Lost and Found” sits nicely in along with the bass line and brings to light a refreshing subtleness that many bands are unable to capture these days.

The instrumentation, vocals and harmonies on “Rainbow Nation” are superb along with strong lyrics. Hopefully this song will receive a high amount of radio airplay.

“The Road” has that, “I feel like I’m in Jamaica feel” to it and reminds me of the time that I was in Negril. The vocals are cool, the horns add a nice element, and the vocal breakdown is smooth with a chilled out, laid back bass groove. The political nature of the lyrics are reminiscent of one of my favorite reggae artists, the late Lucky Dube (video). A brilliant track.

From what I’ve heard so far, UB40’s Twentyfourseven could be the album of the summer for music fans wanting a change from the current radio norm. Twentyfourseven will be the perfect accompaniment to barbecues, garden parties – and don’t forget the Red Stripe!

Sergey Lazarev EXCLUSIVE interview Part II + “Girlfriend”

Sergey Lazarev

Sergey Lazarev

Russian superstar Sergey Lazarev is in my good books, indeed. He’s taken time out for not one, but TWO interviews with me for Band Weblogs.

Read the first exclusive Sergey interview.

Sergey is currently in London on a promo tour in support of his latest single, “Girlfriend” and upcoming album, ‘TV Show’. “Girlfriend” is a winner, made up of pure pop, quality production and Sergey’s voice sounds great. The track is a bit reminiscent of Justin Timberlake, to give you an idea of what it sounds like if you haven’t heard it yet. You can check out the video at the bottom of the interview.

Jenny May: “Girlfriend” is a great song – as well as the remixes. Did you enjoy the making of the video, dancing with all the girls?

Sergey: Yes very much!! It was shot in London and all the girls are stunning models from all over the world including Nigeria and Australia. I still stay in touch with a few girls from the shoot!

You’ve been in the UK recently on a promo tour. How has that been going? What have you been doing in your spare time in the UK when not working?

Everything is going brilliantly but sadly the only problem is that I don’t have any spare time. I seem to know everything about English hotels now – and I have been constantly touring and promoting my new single “Girlfriend”.

Do you have a favorite song at the moment, that you’ve been performing live?

The one that seems to be getting an amazing reaction is the new track Girlfriend and I have introduced something new to the live performance. Something a little bit naughty but nice in the form of a very attractive female dancer that I dance with!! Also I have been nominated for the male artist of the year at MUZ TV awards in Russia and will probably perform Girlfriend there and have a few surprises on stage for the audience.

Are you a big football fan?

Yes I support Spartak Moscow.

What do you think of the historic Champions League, all English final happening in Moscow tonight? Will you be supporting Manchester United or Chelsea?

Definitely Chelsea!

Where will you be watching the game?

I have actually rearranged all interviews for this evening and will be watching it in my hotel suit with my security! I have just done an interview with Talk Sport and just sang the Chelsea anthem in Russian. Anybody that tunes into talk sport now should hear Blue is the Colour in Russian.

Do you have a favorite player? If so, why is he your favorite?

Andre Satvchenko as he is a brilliant tactician.

You told me in our last interview that you stay in touch with Julia and Lena from t.A.T.u. Have you seen their new video for “White Robe” (watch video) yet? If so, what do you think?

Yes I have seen both videos they made. One is for the day time television audience the other is a bit more late night! I like the late night version as it has a cooler feel!

Do you have a message that you would like to send out to your fans?

I am looking forward to meeting you all and hope you come and see me in Birmingham and Newcastle and come and see me perform my new single Girlfriend.

Goldfrapp and their electronica/pop have subtly and endearingly eased into my musical life. With each single release and TV appearances on shows like Jools Holland (watch video) and Jonathan Ross (watch video), I’ve found myself looking forward to their quirkiness and unpredictability more and more over the last few years.

With their latest single, “Happiness”, Goldfrapp has once again caught my attention, and I’m happy to have it as part of my CD collection. The single is off of the British group’s fourth studio album, ‘Seventh Tree’.
