The world is in turmoil. People are frantically searching for answers, a source of peace and certainty. Spirits are in desperate need of a source of refreshment and inspiration. A new music can offer this. That music is “Mystic Jaz”: the invention of New York City based sitarist Dawoud.
Dawoud’s latest recording, Renegade Sufi, marks a new level of musical achievement for the internationally renowned sitarist /composer. Establishing himself as one of the most adventurous and eclectic musicians of our time, Dawoud’s artistic focus has been further shaped by his spiritual practices and insights. His live performances and recordings offer a beautiful and unique musical experience.
The intensity that has been so integral to his music is vividly present on this recording. But rather than attacking the listener with a maelstrom of violent sounds, Mystic Jaz is more akin to inner revelatory visions playing their symphonies upon the listener’s heart. The serene and introspective qualities that permeate “Renegade Sufi” only serve to enhance and illuminate the authority of Dawoud’s artistic vision. “Renegade Sufi” is another step forward for one of the most interesting and adventurous contemporary musicians of the 21st Century.
The CD, as well as Dawoud’s live performances, presents his unique achievements on sitar; much of which has no historical precedent.
Guest musicians on “Renegade Sufi” include Mordior Bamba (vocals, percussion), Ravish Momin (percussion), Tonya Ridgely (flute, vocals), Danny Zanker (bass), and Mark Hagen (bass).
- – - Listeners in and around New York City will have the added pleasure of attending Dawoud’s next major concert. This event will be held on July 28th 8:00pm, at Centerpoint Studios (324 Lafayette Street, 7th floor, New York, NY. 212-925-4789). All of Dawoud’s live performances offer an energy and intensity of musical beauty that few performers equal. – - -
In addition to composing and arranging all of the music, Dawoud also produced several CD projects, composes music for film and theater, presents solo performances, guest appearances on recordings and on stage, and somehow finds time to work on his artworks and poetry.
