Magic, Making Out and Marionettes: The Enigmatic World Of New York's Gypsy Nomads
Folk-punk is as old as the pint glass. Unsurprisingly then, the genre's roots are a bit of a haze. To be sure, they're planted in the pub-filling chantalongs bleary-eyed blokes have been singing for a century or so. But it's hard to point to an exact beginning, which is fitting for a style of music that sounds so timeless.

Through decades of booze-scented hiccups, the story of rogue folk has been told by many. Cantankerous Celts The Pogues are the oft-cited progenitors. Tom Gabel and his angsty band of Against Me! brethren carried the baton into the 21st century, while others like Gogol Bordello have deftly added cabaret ephemera, Balkan overtones and a fantastical circus-esque whimsy to the sound. New York duo The Gypsy Nomads' inspired take borrows from all of the above, but creates a dark, medieval impression all its own.
Composed of French-born Brit Samantha Stephenson and ex-Deep Wound punkster Scott Helland, the pair evoke a tribalistic miasma of ancient sounds as interpreted by a female Gordon Gano. On their fourth release, Happy Madness, Stephenson and Helland are at their songwriting peak, offering up a dozen leering come-ons and sultry kiss-offs about Magic, Making Out, and Marionettes.
Like their nomadic namesake, these Gypsies are currently wandering across the US on a lengthy tour in support of the 'Happy Madness' July 13th album release.
