Remote Control Frequencies is drummer LG and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist R-Rock. Their new album Tempus (The Secret Life of Sound) is a fusion of hip-hop and analog-driven improvisational rock music, and a pioneering new effort in the field of overuse of electro-harmonix pedals.
Remote Control Frequencies began as a late 90’s project of then traveling artist R-Rock. After years of distributing mixtapes and CD-Rs, Remote Control Frequencies debuted with the electronic concept album, 20,000. 20,000 was sewn together with filmstrips, fishing line, and lots of guest appearances by fellow travelers.
In 2004, R-Rock reunited with longtime musical associate L. Grant “LG” Meadows, drummer extraordinaire from the Camel City Bomb Squad days when the two would play together in the tiny hardcore scene in Winston-Salem, NC. Meeting up in Chicago (where R-Rock had started his label The Secret Life of Sound), the two begin work on Tempus: a different kind of Remote Control Frequencies record, one with a nod to their guitar-based band days, but with the Remote Control Frequencies ‘wall of noise’ aesthetic and a keyboard player who still loves to rock the mic to begin work on Tempus.
The fusion of LG’s raw beats and R-Rock’s multi-layered sampledelic songwriting and vocals create a unique intersection of process-oriented electronic music and improvisational live performance. Whereas 20,000 was a concept album, Tempus is a step towards a unifying theory of everything Remote Control Frequencies.
If you’re wondering what this could possibly sound like, imagine David Axelrod sampling Electric Light Orchestra and collaborating with Special Ed, while simultaneously recording Hrvatski and playing chess with RZA as Merzbow attempts to fix the kitchen sink that Captain Beefheart threw up in. If this is too abstract, listen to their two singles “The Negotiator” and “Sanctuary” below. Remote Control Frequencies’ Tempus is out now on The Secret Life of Sound.
