Boston's accordion/guitar rock duo Bird Mancini, will release their third and newest CD, Funny Day on Second Story Records June 1st. Celebration of the release starts with a kick-off CD Release Party at Perks Coffeehouse in Norwood, MA from 8-10pm.
Bird Mancini's eclectic psychedelic Funny Day features a rock pop style that takes a different direction from previous releases. Ruby and Billy sing all the lush vocal arrangements with musical support from members of Bentmen, The Sterns, Grinning Lizards, Bangalore, Pastiche, and The Peacheaters. Well known Boston artist Jane Smaldone provides the surreal cover art for the album.
Bird Mancini has made their living for years playing in Northeast clubs, colleges, resorts, music halls and festivals. They have opened for the likes of David Crosby, Gregg Allman, Jonathan Edwards, James Montgomery, Mighty Sam McClain, Pousette-Dart Band and many others. All of this was on their resume prior to their first release in 1996. Ruby Bird and Billy Carl Mancini's career together spans nearly two decades. Their original recordings have garnered critical acclaim, an ASCAP/Boston Music Award nomination, and fans from all over the world. Twice, in 2002 and 2004, New England’s Metronome Magazine named Bird Mancini among the Top 10 Year’s Best. Their music is its own reward to those lucky enough to find it in an Irish pub in Boston, a breezy summer concert, on the Internet, or simply through word of mouth.
Ruby's early exposure to music was Gospel choirs in country churches and Kansas City blues and swing while Billy Carl cut his guitar-playing teeth on high school rock and roll bands covering songs by 60's greats like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles and the Stones. Funny Day is a direct reflection of all those influences mixed together. The duo forms a highly spirited take on life and music. The two lead singers offer blues-tinged guitar, accordion, and harmonica with a variety of percussion, bells, and whistles—music that refuses to be narrowly defined. As AllMusic.com puts it, "Bird Mancini is likely to please a wide array of listeners."
If you appreciate fusions and variations on rock and roll, blues, pop, Latin jazz, country gospel and psychedelic world beat, you are likely to come away from a Bird Mancini recording or live performance feeling happy you found your way here.
