Last night I watched a great Joni Mitchell performance from 1970 on BBC Four’s California Dreamin’ series. Songs played included “Chelsea Morning”, “Cactus Tree”, “My Old Man”, “For Free”, “California”, “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Both Sides Now”.
Even though I’ve been listening to Joni Mitchell’s music for years, this was the first time that I’ve actually sat down and paid attention to all of the words within her brilliant songs. Usually I listen to melodies and instrumentation first when I hear music and sometimes the problem with that is that I don’t pay as much attention to the lyrics as I probably should.
The good thing about this particular performance, is that it was just Joni playing either her acoustic guitar, piano or lap dulcimer which made it easy to hear each word clearly without distraction. It just amazes me how much talent she has as a musician, singer and songwriter.
One song that especially stood out and one that I hadn’t heard before was “Chelsea Morning”. I also really liked “For Free”.

Joni Mitchell will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame this month. There is also a Joni Mitchell tribute album set for release early this year which includes artists Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris, Sufjan Stevens, Bjork, Cassandra Wilson, Prince, James Taylor, Elvis Costello and Annie Lennox.

I’m not sure, but it would be a good show to add to the collection!
