This Is Music in association with ‘SUP Magazine Launch Party

This Is Music

Our friends at This Is Music didn’t think they were busy enough managing Simian Mobile Disco, James Ford, Findlay Brown, A-Trak, Lord Skywave, Simon Lord, Black Ghosts, Frankmusik & Little Boots so they decided to start a record label! If their taste is as good on the label roster as it is for management, we have a feeling these guys are going to just get busier.

They just released the first record from Barringtone (aka Barry from Clor) and Lord Skywave is out now. Coming soon are releases from Mujava, Findlay Brown, Sisters of Transistors and one of ‘SUP’s favorite bands - INVASION (we’ve heard a few tracks and its SICK!).

When, prior to the release of their second album, Barry Dobbin quit Clor (not, as was reported, due to “musical differences” but because of a hamstring injury), fans thought he was crazy. “You’re crazy,” they said. “As quixotic frontman, you’ve steered this band of gifted reprobates to the brink of national recognition by uniting pop and avant-garde in a way we never thought possible. You can’t desert us now.” “I can, and I am,” said Mr. Dobbin to a scrum of disbelieving journalists.

Barry now performs - with the aid of an amanuensis - alongside Connan Coolidge and Boomer Opperman under the name of Barringtone, delivering his ludic observations on anything from municipal architecture to animal husbandry from the confines of his customised oxygen tent, in a style reminiscent of Brian Eno, Todd Rundgren, Devo, Pavement and with respectful nods to contemporary acts such as Ariel Pink, Palace Music and Deerhoof. Barringtone debut single Snake In The Grass is released on 23rd June, 2008 on This Is Music.

Ex-Simian frontman and Black Ghosts member Simon Lord released his new solo album on This Is Music Records on 9th June, sampling three generations of music-making to create a highly compelling work of leftfield song-based electronica.

He recently debuted his live show, an urban sound with a more abstract or psychedelic sensibility, sampling the songs of his grandmother Madeline Dring. Her old ‘78 reel-to-reel recordings have played a particular part on Skywave’s record. Expect to hear hints of Jamie Lidell, Tim Hardin, Brian Wilson and Serge Gainsbourg. Look out for the Lord Skywave synthesizer built by Simon’s dad in the 70’s he only built 10 and Simon is the proud owner of one of them.

Wet Paint (Trial & Error Recordings) make music governed by a simple premise - whatever you do, make sure that it’s LOUD! Their surging guitars, irreverent lyrics and deceptively simple melodies are all driven by the same slacker-passion that spurts from the likes of Pavement, Dinosaur Jr and Pixies. Wet Paint are ready to rock your socks off!
